by anonymous on 2006-07-20 06:41:02No no, you have it all wrong, as much as people chant they want freedom, this isn't necessarily the case. What people really want is the ability to make an easy decision, unclouded by any reasons that may dampen this process. At the moment, Windows is the OS of choice not because it may be the best or the most reliable...we all know that. It's all about what takes the least amount of effort. Take the DVD-Audio versus Super Audio CD war that recently occurred. Who was the victor in this battle? No one, because it wasn't made apparent enough for the average consumer to grasp onto either side, nor was either shoved down the consumer's throat as "the one to own". For those unaware, neither proved to be the "easy" choice, thus, both failed. Look to the new "VHS versus Betamax" battle in HD-DVD and Blue-ray for future proof of this. I have a feeling that in this case, the current incarnations of the next generation movie formats will end up much like the next generation audio formats. DVD's and Windows will be in the majority's favor for quite some time. -

There is no choice. At least to most computer users. It comes preloaded on their machines, so that is what they use. Computers are already being sold for around $150 (without monitor) at fry's. That's less than what Windows XP costs.. They can do this because they sell it with Linux preloaded. Walmart and China have also realized this, and are doing the same thing. It's just a matter of time before a free OS either takes over, or forces MS to give Windows away for free. -

by anonymous on 2006-07-20 21:29:15I believe it will take much more than Wal-Mart and Fry's to break the mindset of Joe Consumer... It is wishful thinking, I suppose... I like Linux...hell I even like OS2..they are all miracles of modern day engineering in my mind...that includes Windows... -

by metric on 2006-07-22 16:07:06It won't be just walmart and frys that does it. The price will do it. You can't buy a $150 PC with windows on it. If GNU/Linux can provide the same quality, or better, environment for the price of zero, why would vendors choose Windows? If you havn't seen xgl on Linux yet watch this demo. It gets really good around midway through: XGL Demo. Google for an better quality xvid of it. -

by anonymous on 2006-08-13 01:27:37just because something is cheaper/free does not mean people will buy it. i am sure if u look through the grocery ads you would find lots things on sale, but do u really care about it? no, u still buy grocery when ever and where ever is convenient for you. have u ever wonder y there are so many people buying sodas insteed of drinking out of fountains? tanning rooms? the freaking sun is right outside!! why do people stop by starbucks to get their 4 dorra a cup of coffee when they could make their woman make it for 'em:p. you have to remember most people have lives, they have other priorities other than computers. they won't know what other oses are out there for them to obtain even if given the choice. comp nerds have to stop thinking that they are superior than anyone who don't know the difference of differnt oses out there. i am sure there are mechanical buffs out there pointing and laughing about how oridnary people(which will usually include comp nerds) get ripped off by mechanics when they could of done the deed and fix their pile of junk up themselves. what ms is doing is no worse than the mechanics around the corner, the coke companies, nike, or any other opotunistic entrepreneurs.
